Congress is going at Gene Upshaw regarding the
I stand by the notion that what happens to the players
matters to All of us.

Whether Congress will ultimately consider action, or whether the hearing served merely as its public relations warning to the league and union to improve a disability system that the panel depicted as drawn-out and draconian, remained unclear one day after the hearing. But three members of the committee reasserted in telephone interviews yesterday that they would consider legislation should they not see improvements to the treatment of retired players, of whom 317 received disability payments of about $63,000 apiece last year.

Health care is a human right that YOU WILL HAVE TO FIGHT
for.

Football is a violent, brutal sport. It’s even more violent and more brutal when played by the biggest and best players.

The retired players should have understood that when they joined the league. They didn’t. Because when you’re 25 you think you’re indestructible, and the future seems a long way away.

That future is now for some 10,000 former players, and it’s more painful than they ever imagined. Just 317 are receiving disability payments, and most of the others believe they should be getting far more in pension pay than they do.

Its f*cking expensive and necessary.

Upshaw knows where his loyalties lie, even though he falls in the same group of retired players the union is so wary of giving money to. He’s employed by current players, who have made it clear they are more concerned with keeping money in the fund for their future than paying it out for those who went ahead of them.

The thing about it is, the current players may one day in the future be pickled and crushed in the cranium. And who are they gonna ask for help then? The same retired
players union that they thought was irrelvent when they were active
in the league?

Haiti.

AND

Hip Hop.

This effect is augmented by the soundtrack, much of it by the Haitian-American hip-hop star Wyclef Jean (who appears in the film and takes an executive producer credit), and also by Mr. Leth?s slick, speedy editing.

Bily and 2Pac, who aspires to be a rapper as well as a warlord, live a gangster lifestyle that exceeds the wildest fantasies of an American hip-hop video. Their mixture of nihilism and sentimentality ? the way they combine loyalty to home turf with a ruthless appetite for violence ? is undoubtedly authentic. Whether they deserve to be treated as outlaw pop-culture heroes is a question Mr. Leth declines to explore.

I could think of only few other BETTER ways to spend
a Friday night.

Oh and speaking of sports.

The NBA draft is upon us and the one and done “high schooler’s must sit out a year rule”
gets analyzed by

One and done? is a dramatic change from the system put in place in 1976, when the ?Oscar Robertson rule? ? a court settlement between the N.B.A. and its players association ? removed all restrictions from the N.B.A. draft. I believe that policy should still be the case. If an 18-year-old can fight and die in the military, why can?t he pursue an N.B.A. career if he?s good enough and someone is willing to offer him a contract?

— ———–Raises hand. MEME ME ME MEMEMEMEE. I have an answer. Because, a dead n*gga in Iraq is much less of a threat than a rich young n*gga in the NBA.

American sports are crazy paternal to young black men.

Think about it.

What other sports have an age pre req before one is eligble to turn pro?

Football?
Hockey?
Tennis?
Wrestling

Here is a nice tidbit that I really trip off of all at the same time,

There are hundreds of other teenage athletes who have been mistakenly led to believe they?re ready for the N.B.A. Once they enter the draft and find out they?re wrong, it?s too late: they?re not allowed to attend or return to college on an athletic scholarship.

In no other line of work is someone penalized for leaving or delaying school and returning later. Besides, college coaches ? who can make millions of dollars ? negotiate with other colleges, or with N.B.A. teams, all the time. They don?t forfeit their employment if they decide to stay put.

Penalized if you leave, eh?
Damned if you do. Damed if you do.

    Arn’t they.

And Alvin is such a sweet dude too.

    Soo happy for them.

They’ll have little over achieving black babies.

    LOL.

    She’s Nigerian. Interesting…

I have two wedding invitations with one confirmed somewhere in the east coast.

Should Gene Upshaw be the only one held accountable though?

Eh, I still think college is important for a kid who wants to turn pro. I do understand however there are times when one has no choice but to go pro but if you do have the opportunity to go to college first I personally would advice that. The intangibles of responsibility, accountability to yourself and your school-work I think helps in a lot of ways to prep a kid for the wild, crazy world of pro athletes..but that’s me.

I will agree in the light of age augmented rules the military one is bogus if a kid at that same age isn’t allowed to pop bottles.

What? You don’t like Nigerian-Negro Love Neo?

Should Gene Upshaw be the only one held accountable though?
    =========
    a. The unspoken truth is that coaches coercered players into playing w/ concussions and the Team Doctors was in on it two.

    b. I like tough Black men. But Gene is a target because he comes across like a hot headed f*ck wad. Todays star is tomorrow’s loser.
Health Care is a Human Right.

Who is to stay that the student athletes have not learned sufficient accountability and responsibility by the time they are 18?

  4. neo says

Good point @ 18 but my point was more about being in college and experiencing that phase of life before getting into the pros. The jump from HS to the pros is a HUGE cultural, moral jump for a kid to take..

I don’t have a prob with Nigerian-Negro love. Some ppl do on both sides of the spectrum, I don’t however..am all for it. It was interesting in this case, ‘cos you don’t get to see more of our women getting married to y’alls men..its mostly the other way round.

  5. neo says

Hot headed @ Upshaw? I’d have thought the direct opp. Cats I’ve heard on interviews refer to him as super passive..like he’s just >there< ya meen?

  6. Aunt Jackie says

having dated a football coach the stats on football are much slimmer than a dude who can hoop.

    No One

I repeat, Not one single person

Goes from High School to the NFL due to size and skill, it’s a different game and little boys are not allowed to play. Period!

Next Stat 3% of those who play football in college will play in the NFL so 97% of those dudes are just alumni fundraisers and Saturday entertainment!

My old dude said that his job as a college level coach was to teach these young boys how to be men because the numbers were entirely too low for them to count on going pro….it’s deep!

  7. neo says

Felt @ Aunt Jackie..almost every person I’ve met that has played football on some level has told me this.

  8. M.Dot. says

    I wonder why that is.

Dont underestimate the importance of Saturday entertainment and fundraising.

I posit that professional f-ball much is like golf in that it provides an opportunity for white men to chill poly and make power moves.

    ==================================
In the NFL, you have to be two years removed from high school to enter the league.

I think that the NFLPA(& Upshaw) is a little scandless because their not working to take better care of former players. But it’s not their fault that things like this are never planned for before they happen. I just hope the current players are aware that the same fate awaits them.

High school players should be allowed to go straight to the league. If the owners want to pay them the money, let them give it to them.

    College ain’t for everybody.

I’ve interacted with alot of college athletes and their just like us. Some do the right thing and some don’t. I know some players who are working on their masters degrees and others who are barely making it.

  12. M.Dot. says

    Based on what?

Not question your authority, but I want some back up.

  13. neo says

Culturally, our women are raised to only bring Nigerian men home. It’s an uneven treatment, men are less sheltered than women, women are protected all their lives up until they leave college (graduate yo!).

Men have more sexual freedom than women in our society..moreso than women. For instance nobody sneezes at a man sleeping around with various ladies, be a woman and do same, you get called a wh***. A woman will typically face a lot more resistance trying to bring a non-Nigerian home than a man bringing a non-Nigerian lady home.

The fear is that since the woman is a part extension of the fam, some parents wouldn’t want ol’ girl to be mixed in with some other race or ethnic group..they wanna preserve the lineage if you get my drift. Not in all cases but in some cases this is the mindset behind that.

    Is it fair? No.

On the other hand, a lot of Nigerian women actually prefer being with us for reasons of compatibility esp from a cultural standpoint. You tend to click well with someone who comes from the same background as you.
