Yay! Now that your blog is back, I can comment...This is a very cogent, well-argued essay. I am also glad you addressed the FULL spectrum of what was so problematic about this interview. He manages to belittle and demean just about anyone who's not a straight, WASP-y male.

I'm not mad. Not shocked either. Maybe a little surprised that he let his guard down to that degree. But the older I get, the more I realize certain people have a job to do and I have to do mine.

It is some people's jobs to do whatever they can do degrade other people's humanity just because they're brown. Or a woman. Or gay. And so on and so forth. My job is to resist that any way that I can. Point blank period. Things like this just make that more apparent.

Thanks for sharing!

Why would he feel safe in a men magazine? I find that to be...(lost for words) it's not like the magazine isn't bought by black men and white men. The same for playboy I think he was just comfortable period. While I don't agree with what he said he has the freedom to say it. It's funny how blacks are so quick to judge a white person when they say something about us but not another black person just the same. It's funny that we ourselves refer to each other as Niggas but when someone of a different race says it all hell breaks lose. Then we give pathetic excuses to continue to use the word when in actuallity its laziness to be creative and find a new word to embrace each other or show endearement.

As far as the black woman comment I am offended that he feels that way about black women because I feel that you all are Beautiful! But that my opinion and MY truth that doesnt neccassarily have to be his. But I think the portrayal of the black woman is on the low end and has been for decades. But do we blame one white man for this or do we include ourselves in this for cont. to perpetuate the stereotype. I keep hearing arguments such as this but everytime I turn to BET theres some black chick on there shaking her butt. If we want to change the outlook of black women in society why does it matter the color of the black women in the videos if the light skinned one also look like hoes what are the dark skinned ones going to do dress it up?

And for the fag comment I say it is what it is I believe in equality and that everyone should be treated with respect and kindness but gays and blacks aren't the only ones to be mistreated. But it seems that you have a softspot for the gay community. But like I said in my last post why does it seem like you want everyone to have your look out or perspective. As a man once again why do I have to embrace the fact that another man finds me attractive of wants to get me in bed. To me its not natural and disgusting to be honest but i do know gay people and a great majority are cool but i draw the line when it comes to my comfort zone and your feelings.

@Wise,

Thank you for stopping by and for sharing.
I really like the tone of your comment. I could hear your voice as I read the words.

Mayer felt safe because he was in a Men?s magazine and as many of my peers said, I wasn?t shocked at all by his tone. I was shocked to witness his apology, however. I don?t think he needed to apologize. I believe he needed to clarify. I won?t go as far as (white) rapper Mac Lethal tweeted on his Twitter account and say ?you don?t have to apologize for that. You didn?t do anything wrong.? He absolutely said some off-color things that need to be picked apart and understood.
========
Nothing like being safe, is it?

His apology, yeah that made my ass itch.

Like Audre said, I don't want your shame or guilt, I want your action.

An apology unaccompanied by right action is worthless, because we can only know the harm
that we have cause through reflection. Yet, a 24/7 igeneration world how is reflection possible?

A willingness for him to learn how his racist, sexist, homophobic comments are rooted in history
would have sufficed. I told my homie that a Tim Wise, anti racist training, or a Alice Walker moment
would have sufficed. BUt that would have entailed a commitment to changing, and you and I both
know that that only occurs when we have gone through a profound loss.

Peace,

I was on Twitter the day this "story" broke and levied some heavy critique of what I witnessed as "broadly accepted and widely celebrated music artist far too comfortable with his too-cool-for-school (and ham-handed) positions on race, women, and sex".

As addressed in Vee's response, the society that creates an attitude of Mayer's egoistical enormity is all around us. We all suffer the weight of Patriarchy's dominant hand and these loose-lipped blurts end up being the result of the privilege of being male, talented, handsome (in some eyes), seemingly intelligent and publicly available. Not to mention White.

Social Media, along with the Internet, has totally blown open the door of acceptable decency. Mayer felt safe because he was in a Men's magazine and as many of my peers said, I wasn't shocked at all by his tone. I was shocked to witness his apology, however. I don't think he needed to apologize. I believe he needed to clarify. I won't go as far as (white) rapper Mac Lethal tweeted on his Twitter account and say "you don't have to apologize for that. You didn't do anything wrong." He absolutely said some off-color things that need to be picked apart and understood.

Mayer, if he wants his so-called "hood pass" (whatever the hell that is) to remain valid, he had to speak to the issue. I want to believe I took him out of context (and I believe in some small way we have). I was equally disturbed by how he spoke so candidly about Jessica Simpson and their sexual relationship. That shows a lack of decorum and respect for someone you claimed to have loved at one time.

Mayer just seems careless. Witty and charming as many may consider him to be, he has always come off to me as smarmy -- he just has this knowing sh*t-eating grin that annoys me to bits.

This does provide great fodder for discussions in a variety of directions.

Thanks for this piece,

Faith,

There is a distinction between, not wanting to deal with Black women, as you claim is the issue with Cornel West, and Mayer's bigotry, as manifested by his who comfort using racist, sexist and homophobic language.

I don't do compulsory heterosexuality nor compulsory race loyalty. I am a human being. We all are.

If Cornel West, or anyone for that matter chooses not to date Black women, its none of my business. So long as he treats who ever is dealing with like a human being, is my concern, in general for all of us.

You raise good points. I find it a bit ironic you use Cornel West as an example considering he may know how black bodies are used but in his personal life he rejects black women the same way John Mayer does. West's concern extends as far as his own sovereignty is guaranteed. It's still racialized sexism.
